Getting Backlinks by Networking on Twitter

We all know how hard it can be to get legitimate links naturally, so what does one do when they try to speed up the process yet still remain as professional and legitimate as possible? Well I know that I like to do one of my favorite methods and that is seeing if I can get featured on or provide other websites in my verticals with guest posts. This not only provides value to web but it also gets my website more backlinks. I’m a full advocate for non-spam linkbuilding rather than polluting and making the web a poor place for other people who are trying to do the right thing or are just looking for information.

Today I read an article over at SEOMOZ and it really rung true with me. I too, find myself in this weird spot when I reach out to other website owners and ask for guest posts and to be featured. Why? Well, a part of me attributes this to begging, and in all reality it sort of is. While my articles do provide them with fresh content that will help their audience, I’m basically saying “hey I need help, my website doesn’t get lots of promotion on its own.” Maybe it’s my sense of pride, but as an SEO person and online marketer it sits a little weird with me.

The article was featured as the whiteboard Friday, that I read and it opens up a great optional source that many don’t use to reach out and gain links and that’s with Twitter. I haven’t really thought of Twitter too much before reading this wonderful article and subsequently watching the video a few times to fully grasp and expound upon her ideas. I’m the type that just can’t take someone’s idea and leave it at that. I need to adapt it and make it better, and sometimes I honestly make it worse and have to rethink my gameplan, but that’s all in a day’s work as a marketer.

If you aren’t using Twitter for more than the occasional tweet of randomness, and not interacting with the people within your industry, then you are missing out on a lot of potential here. If you cannot do it yourself, hire someone to do this for you and give it a try for a trial period of say 60 days and then report back and reflect on how it helped your efforts. The video, so you don’t have to chase it down is below for your enjoyment and education.
